LESSON 17 / 42
Weight for the diamond. Purity for the gold.
Carat and karat sound almost the same, which is why they are so often confused. They measure two completely different things.
Carat, abbreviated ct, measures a diamond’s weight. One carat equals 0.20 grams. Karat, abbreviated K, expresses the proportion of gold in an alloy, counted in parts out of 24. 18K gold is 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75% gold. The remaining metals add strength and influence the colour of the gold, whether yellow, white or rose.
A simple way to remember it: weight for the diamond, purity for the gold. When designing a piece, consider both the diamond’s carat weight and the gold’s karat fineness. Maylaya Gems crafts jewellery in gold from 9K to 18K.
