A thoughtful way to compare
Start with your priorities
Think about how you will wear the piece and which outlines you enjoy. Choose a few stones of similar shape to compare. A shortlist is easier to understand when you record the same information for each diamond.
Read the details together
Compare carat weight with length and width in millimetres. Add colour, clarity, finish and any cut assessment stated on the report. A larger carat number does not specify a fixed face-up size, and one high grade does not describe the whole diamond.
Look beyond a photograph
Ask to view the individual stone, or a clear video, under comparable lighting. Observe brightness, contrast and any visible characteristics as it moves. For elongated shapes, look across the centre as well as at the outline. Use images for comparison, not as proof of origin or a grading reference.
Check before choosing
Read the report’s origin and comments, verify its number on the issuing laboratory’s website, and ask how it is matched to the stone. Keep a note of what you prefer about each option. The aim is an informed choice that suits you.
