A darker pattern across the centre
Some elongated brilliant cuts show a darker pattern across the centre of the stone, shaped a little like a bow tie. It can appear in oval and marquise diamonds, and to some degree in other elongated brilliant shapes.
The bow-tie effect varies from diamond to diamond. In some stones it is barely noticeable; in others it is more pronounced. It can also shift with the viewing angle and the lighting, which is why a single still photograph rarely tells the full story.
Observe the diamond in motion and under different lighting. Tilt it gently and consider how the darker areas change alongside the bright facets. Look for a balance of light and contrast that appeals to you. The image shown uses illustrative lighting.
