LESSON 11 / 42

The vocabulary of proportion

Knowing the names of a diamond’s parts makes conversations about proportion and cut much easier to follow. A polished diamond is usually described in four main areas: the table, the crown, the girdle and the pavilion.

The table is the flat top facet, usually the largest facet on a standard round brilliant. The crown is the upper portion, between the table and the girdle. The girdle is the outer edge, the narrow band that defines the diamond’s outline and where it is often held by a setting. The pavilion is the lower portion, angling down beneath the girdle.

Each part plays a role in light. The angles and sizes of the crown and pavilion, and the width of the table, work together to influence how light enters, travels and returns to the eye. These relationships help explain why diamonds with similar outlines can handle light differently.
