Purity, colour and the details to ask about
What the number means
Karat expresses gold content in 24 parts. 9K contains 37.5% gold, nominal 14K about 58.3%, and 18K 75%. You may also see 585 on 14K jewellery, indicating 58.5% gold. Read the stated fineness for the particular piece.
Colour is a separate choice
Yellow, white and rose gold are made with different alloy combinations. Colour alone does not establish purity. Ask which metals are used and whether the surface is plated; white-gold pieces may have a rhodium finish.
Choose the whole piece
Consider the design, finish and care it needs, as well as the karat. Ask about the alloy if you know you react to particular metals. Before ordering, confirm the gold colour, fineness, available finish and maintenance instructions in writing.
