การทำความเข้าใจคุณภาพของเพชรเริ่มต้นได้จากหลักสี่ข้อที่เรียกว่า 4Cs ได้แก่ การเจียระไน (Cut) สี (Colour) ความสะอาด (Clarity) และน้ำหนักกะรัต (Carat) แต่ละข้อบอกลักษณะที่แตกต่างกันของเพชร จึงไม่มีข้อใดข้อหนึ่งที่บอกเรื่องราวทั้งหมดได้เพียงลำพัง

Four ways to understand a diamond
The 4Cs offer a shared language for understanding a diamond: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Each one describes a different characteristic, which is why no single grade can tell you everything about a stone.
Cut describes how a diamond’s facets interact with light. For diamonds in the normal colour range, colour is assessed on the D–Z scale. Clarity considers the internal and surface characteristics of the stone. Carat is the diamond’s weight, rather than a fixed measure of its size.
The most useful habit is to read all four together. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look quite different when their cut, colour or clarity differ. Use the four characteristics together when comparing diamonds side by side.
