LESSON 04 / 42
Weight, not a fixed diameter
Carat is a unit of weight. One metric carat equals 0.20 grams, and each carat is divided into 100 points, so a 50-point diamond weighs half a carat. It measures weight precisely, but does not specify a diamond’s dimensions.
Carat does not describe a fixed diameter. The face-up size of a diamond also depends on its shape and proportions. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different in size because one may carry more of its weight in depth, while another spreads it across a wider outline.
That is why it helps to compare measurements, too. A diamond report lists the stone’s dimensions in millimetres, which gives a clearer sense of how it will look on the hand. Read carat weight alongside millimetre measurements for a clearer comparison.
