Educational graphic comparing a diamond under regular light and long wave uv light to show fluorescence

Educational illustration, not a diamond grading reference.

LESSON 08 / 42

A response to ultraviolet light

Some diamonds emit visible light when exposed to ultraviolet illumination. This is known as fluorescence, and blue is the most common fluorescence colour. The illustration compares ordinary lighting with long-wave UV to explain the effect.

Fluorescence is a response to the lighting, rather than the diamond’s ordinary body colour. Not every diamond fluoresces, and the strength of the effect varies from stone to stone.

Grading reports list fluorescence separately from colour, as a separate characteristic. It is best understood alongside the stone’s actual appearance: look at the diamond in everyday lighting and judge how it looks to you. The illustration here is an illustrative lighting comparison, not a grading reference.
