Protect, check, clean
Hardness describes resistance to scratching. Diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs scale, reflecting its high resistance to scratching. Yet hardness is not the same as being unbreakable: a hard impact at the wrong angle can still chip or break a diamond.
Good care looks after the entire piece, including its setting and any other gemstones. Protect your jewellery by avoiding sharp knocks, and remove it for heavy work. Check it regularly, and have loose settings inspected by a jeweller before wearing the piece again.
When it comes to cleaning, use gentle care suited to the whole piece. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning can loosen stones, so have your jewellery checked by a professional first and ask whether these methods are appropriate.
