Same crystal. Different origin.
A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond. It shares the crystal structure and optical properties of a natural diamond; the key distinction is its origin. A natural diamond formed in the Earth, while a lab-grown diamond is grown using technology.
This is an important distinction from simulants. Moissanite and cubic zirconia may be used to imitate the look of diamond, but they are different materials. IGI distinguishes laboratory-grown diamonds from simulants such as these, and its reports state a diamond’s origin clearly.
Because lab-grown and natural diamonds are so alike, a casual visual comparison cannot tell them apart. Specialist laboratory testing is used to establish origin. Whatever you choose, ask for clear origin disclosure and read it on the report, so that your choice is based on clear information.
