Educational illustration, not a diamond grading reference.
LESSON 06 / 42
What a grader looks for at 10×
Clarity considers two kinds of characteristics. Inclusions are internal characteristics and may reach the surface; blemishes are surface characteristics.
Graders assess these characteristics under 10× magnification. They consider size, number, position, nature and relief, which describes how much a characteristic stands out against the surrounding diamond. Together, these factors influence the final clarity grade.
A clarity grade is a laboratory assessment under defined viewing conditions. It is not a guarantee that every characteristic will be visible, or invisible, to the unaided eye. Use the grade to understand the stone, then look at the diamond itself, face up and at a normal viewing distance. The illustration here is for explanation only.
