Consider how the ring will feel
Prong, bezel and pavé
Prongs are small metal claws that hold the stone while leaving much of it visible. A bezel uses a metal rim around the edge. Pavé describes closely set small stones, often along a band; it can appear alongside a prong-set or bezel-set centre diamond.
Check the profile
View the ring from the side. Consider how high the centre sits, whether edges may catch on clothing, and how the band feels between your fingers. If you plan to wear a second ring beside it, try the two designs together.
Match the design to your routine
Describe your daily activities to the jeweller and ask how the stone is secured, how to clean beneath it, and when to arrange inspections. No setting makes a ring immune to damage. If a stone moves or a prong catches unexpectedly, stop wearing it and ask for an inspection.
A useful distinction
Solitaire, halo and three-stone describe overall design arrangements. Prong and bezel describe ways of holding a stone. Understanding both makes it easier to explain the combination you want.
