Educational graphic explaining the limits of grading diamonds that are already mounted in a setting

LESSON 24 / 42

Mounted grading has limits

Once a diamond is set, prongs and metal can restrict the view of parts of the stone. That makes a full assessment more difficult than it would be for a loose diamond.

IGI explains that mounted stones may receive colour and clarity ranges when the setting limits assessment. On a report you may see wording such as “Graded as mounting permits”, which may mean a range is given for colour and clarity rather than a single grade.

This wording explains the limits of the assessment. Look for the wording that explains how the piece was graded, and check whether the assessment concerns a loose diamond or a mounted stone.
