LESSON 18 / 42
Length ÷ width
For fancy shapes such as ovals, pears and marquise diamonds, the length-to-width ratio is a simple way to describe the outline. It is calculated by dividing the diamond’s length by its width.
A higher ratio gives a more elongated outline, while a lower ratio creates a broader, softer silhouette. The degree of elongation is a style preference, and different hands and settings suit different proportions.
Ratio alone does not establish cut quality. Two diamonds with the same ratio can handle light quite differently. Compare the silhouettes you love side by side, and consider how the shape looks on your hand and within its intended setting before you decide.
