LESSON 32 / 42
Tone and saturation
Tone and saturation describe different aspects of a blue diamond’s appearance. Tone describes how light or dark the colour appears, while saturation describes its strength. Because these are different qualities, a darker diamond is not automatically more vivid.
Blue diamonds can also have modifying colour descriptions. A secondary colour, such as a greyish or greenish influence, is recorded as part of the colour description and helps capture the stone’s overall appearance more precisely than the word blue alone.
When you look at a blue diamond, compare the report wording and the actual stone. The full colour description, read alongside your own impression of the diamond in good light, offers a fuller picture than a photograph alone. The illustrations in this guide are educational and are not grading samples.
