Fancy Red and hue variations
Red uses a distinct colour description. The red colour range receives the Fancy intensity description, rather than the series of intensity steps used for many other colours.
Within that range, you may see words such as purplish or orangy. Purplish and orangy describe hue changes, indicating whether the red leans towards purple or towards orange. They are not steps on a faint-to-vivid red scale, and do not, by themselves, specify tone or saturation.
Understanding this helps you read a red diamond’s description accurately: the main word tells you the colour family, the modifier tells you its direction. As always, the shades shown in this guide are illustrations, and the report and the stone itself are what matter.
