LESSON 16 / 42
The distinction includes the surface
Flawless and Internally Flawless are the two highest grades on the clarity scale. They sound alike, yet they are different clarity grades, and the difference is precise.
A diamond graded FL, or Flawless, shows no inclusions or blemishes visible to a skilled grader at 10× magnification. A diamond graded IF, or Internally Flawless, shows no inclusions at that magnification, although surface blemishes may be visible.
The surface therefore matters when distinguishing the two grades. Both grades are assessed by a skilled grader at 10×, and both describe diamonds of exceptional clarity. Knowing the difference helps you read a report accurately and ask informed questions when comparing stones. As with every clarity grade, view the diamond itself as well, since the grade describes the stone under magnification rather than in everyday wear.
