Educational illustration, not a diamond grading reference.

LESSON 15 / 42

A closer look at clarity

VVS and VS sit next to each other on the clarity scale, and their similar names can be confusing. The difference lies in how readily a skilled grader can see a diamond’s inclusions under magnification.

VVS stands for very, very slightly included. Its inclusions are difficult for a skilled grader to see at 10×. VS stands for very slightly included. Its inclusions are minor, ranging from difficult to somewhat easy to see at that same magnification.

These descriptions refer to a skilled grader working with a 10× loupe or microscope, not to what you will see when wearing the piece. The grade reflects the visibility and other characteristics of the inclusions. Use the grade to understand the report, then look at the diamond itself to see how it appears to you.
