From Flawless to Included
The diamond clarity scale runs from FL to I3. It is organised into six categories: FL, IF, VVS, VS, SI and I. Each category describes how readily a skilled grader can see a diamond’s characteristics under magnification.
Several categories are subdivided. VVS becomes VVS1 and VVS2, VS becomes VS1 and VS2, SI becomes SI1 and SI2, and the I category runs from I1 through I2 to I3. Together, these subdivisions create 11 grades.
Grades are assessed by a skilled grader at 10× magnification. A clarity grade describes clarity, not carat weight. When you compare diamonds, use the scale to understand each report, then compare the stones themselves under similar lighting.
