Ask what the number includes
One diamond or several?
A carat is a unit of gemstone weight. Total carat weight, often written as TCW or CTW, adds together the weights of the stones included in the stated total. Always ask which stones are counted.
An illustrative example
A ring with a 0.50 ct centre diamond and two 0.25 ct side diamonds has 1.00 ct total diamond weight. Its centre stone is still 0.50 ct. This arithmetic example does not show actual dimensions or establish the diamonds’ grades.
Read a pair as a pair
For earrings, ask whether the description refers to one earring or the pair. For a necklace or bracelet, ask for the number of diamonds, their individual or approximate sizes, and whether the total is measured or estimated.
Keep materials separate
Gold weight in grams is different from diamond weight in carats. If a piece contains diamonds and coloured gemstones, ask for separate descriptions and weight totals. On a jewellery report, read any limits associated with assessing stones while mounted.
