The standard round brilliant
A standard round brilliant diamond has 57 facets. When a small culet facet is present at the bottom of the stone, the count becomes 58. Both are correct descriptions of the same classic design.
The culet is the facet at the very bottom of the pavilion. Some diamonds are finished to a point without one, while others have a tiny flat facet there. The extra culet facet accounts for the difference.
Knowing the count is helpful, but it is not a measure of beauty on its own. Facet count alone is not a quality grade. The proportions and arrangement of those facets are essential, because they determine how light moves through the diamond. Two round brilliants with identical facet counts can look quite different when their angles and symmetry differ.
