(Symmetry)

Polish and symmetry
Beyond proportions, a diamond report often records two finishing details: polish and symmetry. They describe different aspects of the cutter’s work.
Polish refers to the condition of the facet surfaces, how smooth and well finished they are. Symmetry refers to the precision of the facet arrangement: how evenly the facets are shaped, aligned and meet one another around the stone.
Both describe craftsmanship, and both complement the wider assessment of proportions and light performance. Read them alongside the overall cut assessment rather than in isolation. Neither grade should be used alone to judge the diamond’s overall appearance.
