LESSON 26 / 42
Step cut and brilliant cut
Emerald and Asscher step cuts create a different visual rhythm from brilliant cuts. Step cuts have long, parallel facets arranged in tiers, producing broad, orderly flashes of light, a look many people describe as calm and architectural.
Brilliant cuts, such as the round brilliant, use many smaller facets radiating from the centre. They produce many lively reflections and a more intricate pattern of sparkle as the stone moves.
The two patterns offer different visual effects; the pattern alone does not establish a diamond’s quality. The broad windows of a step cut also tend to reveal more of a diamond’s interior, while brilliant patterns scatter light more actively. Compare the facet patterns side by side and choose the light you enjoy.
