Illustrated comparison of a milky fancy white diamond and a colourless d–f diamond

Educational illustration, not a diamond grading reference.

LESSON 42 / 42

Whitish is not colourless

In conversation, a colourless diamond is often called a white diamond. In coloured diamond terminology, however, Fancy White is its own description, and it means something quite specific.

Fancy White describes a whitish or milky appearance, a soft, translucent quality that gives the stone a gentle glow. It is distinct from a D–F diamond in the colourless category of the normal D–Z scale. That colour category does not, by itself, guarantee transparency.

These examples illustrate the difference, not a grading threshold. Use the report’s colour description to distinguish the two appearances, rather than relying on the everyday word white. Read it alongside the stone itself.
