LESSON 34 / 42
Shades of green and colour origin
Green appearances in diamond span a broad range of tones and saturations, from soft, light greens to deeper, stronger ones. They often include modifying hues, such as a yellowish or bluish influence, which are recorded in the colour description.
Green is also a reminder that colour has an origin of its own. A diamond’s colour may have developed during its formation or growth, or it may be the result of treatment after the fact. These possibilities can look very similar to the eye.
A laboratory assessment is needed to investigate colour origin; read the conclusion and any limitations stated in the report. When considering a green diamond, read the report’s statement on colour origin as carefully as the colour description itself. The shades shown here are illustrative and are not grading samples.
