LESSON 02 / 42

Choose an outline. Look closely at its light.

Round, oval and pear are words that describe a diamond’s shape: the outline you see when you look at it face up. Cut quality is something different. It concerns the facets, proportions and craftsmanship that influence how the diamond appears.

When people speak of a well-cut diamond, they are referring to how well its facets interact with light. Proportions, polish and symmetry all play a part. Where an overall cut grade is provided, read it in the context of that shape and the report’s grading criteria. It does not rank one shape above another.

Begin with a silhouette you love, then observe how the individual diamond handles light. Shape is a matter of personal style; cut quality is a matter of craftsmanship.
