LESSON 03 / 42
Three kinds of diamond light
A diamond’s sparkle combines several visual effects. Knowing their names helps you describe what you see and compare stones more thoughtfully.
Brightness is the white light reflected back to your eye. Fire is the separation of light into flashes of spectral colour. Scintillation includes the flashes of sparkle and the changing pattern of light and dark areas you see as the diamond, the light or the viewer moves.
Cut helps shape that visual performance, because the angles and arrangement of the facets decide where light travels inside the stone and where it leaves. When you compare diamonds, view them in more than one lighting environment and move them gently in your hand. Notice how its brightness, coloured flashes and changing contrast work together.
